Millions of people around the world are denied access to independent journalism. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) sought to challenge this with insight: Even where the media gets strictly controlled – the lotteries always make the news. RSF turned the lottery numbers into an access code for independent journalism.

And since the lotteries are state owned the regimes involuntarily promoted the code all over the state media. To target people directly, we partnered with local journalists and large Twitter accounts and spread our idea through social media campaigns in the country’s native languages.
